Professional Academic Advising

A professional academic advisor is a staff member who understands the role of advising in undergraduate education, understands the structure of the curriculum in the Collge of Health and is familiar with resources and support available to students, both academically and personally. The advisor participates in training around student development and learning theories, understands generational and cultural competencies of diverse student populations and engages in continual training to stay up to date with all of these aspects of advising.

Professional advisors demonstate ethical advising practices by understanding FERPA guidelines and confidentiality protocol, and exhibit appropriate boundaries with students. They are also effective communicators who employ active listening techniques, ask effective questions, and encourage student reflection. They also practice self-reflection and recognize their own professional strengths and limitations, working collaboratively with the advising team to more effectively advise students.
