Students Share Summer Research and Internship Experiences

Forum Highlights the Experiential Learning that is Key to College of Health Undergraduate Programs

The Lehigh University College of Health (COH) prides itself on encouraging and facilitating a 360-educational approach for its students.

COH professors believe that hands-on relevant research and work are essential not just to graduate students and Ph.D. candidates but also to undergraduate students.

To showcase the work being done by students in the College while providing a blueprint for their peers, the COH held its first Undergraduate Forum for Summer Experiences and Research in the STEPS Concourse.

The event began with a welcome and presentation by Dr. Elizabeth A. Dolan, interim dean of the COH. Dolan highlighted the breadth of the research and internships students took part in during the past summer, including working directly with COH faculty, departments across the university, and externally with corporate and non-profit entities.

"What makes these numerous enriching opportunities so special is that so many of them were our first cohort of undergraduate students," Dolan said. "It underscores how likely it is for our students to conduct research and take part in meaningful internships in only their first year at Lehigh."

Following Dolan's welcome, COH students presented information regarding their experiences illustrated on posters they created. Students who provided presentations included Abigail Bryer, Emily Grace, Isabelle Lovvoll, Abby Goldberg, Maddie Schott, Allison Codi, and Krisana Goel.

Areas of COH student research have included liver cancer epidemiology, COVID-19 predictive modeling, mental and community impacts of COVID-19, environmental pollution and asthma, Native American Health, and community resilience and safe motherhood in Sierra Leone. Students have worked with such organizations as the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the City of Bethlehem, Aledade, and St. Luke's Hospital Network.
