Erika Schillinger, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine, is Vice Chief for Education in the Division of Primary Care and Population Health, Director of the Foundations of Academic Clinical Excellence and Transformation (FACET) fellowship, and Director of the Stanford Healthcare Innovations and Experiential Learning Directive (SHIELD). She serves as an Educator for CARE (Compassion, Advocacy, Responsibility and Empathy) core clinical faculty mentor at the Stanford School of Medicine. Dr. Schillinger graduated from Harvard University, where she studied History and Literature, received her MD from Stanford, and completed a residency in Family Medicine and faculty development fellowship both at UCSF.
Dr. Schillinger specializes in patient-engaged, learner-centered teaching and patient-centered care. While championing student, resident and faculty clinical skills and leadership development, she has designed and implemented innovative curricula in doctor-patient communication, physical examination and clinical reasoning. She co-developed the OSLER (O’Connor Stanford Leaders in Education Residency) program, an educational scholarship track for Stanford’s Family Medicine residency, and the SHIELD program, which serves as an incubator for early, value-added, immersive clinical education for medical students. One such program, the first-year course Walk with Me: A Patient Engaged Exploration of the Healthcare System, is a cornerstone of a novel Program in Patient and Family Engaged Medical Education, a program she directs. Her latest project, a faculty development program called FACET, invests in early career primary care faculty through skills development, ecosystem education, cohort facilitation and health systems project implementation. She and her husband Marc are the proud parents of a current student in the IDEAS program at Lehigh and his two older siblings who are both on the west coast.
