John Hughes is a statistician and computer scientist. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. in statistics from Penn State University, his M.S. in applied computer science from Frostburg State University, and his B.S. in mathematics and computer science from Frostburg State University. Before coming to Lehigh, Dr. Hughes held tenure-track appointments at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and the University of Colorado, Denver, and a research appointment at Penn State, University Park.
Dr. Hughes' methodological research focuses on models for dependent data (especially high-dimensional data such as spatial and spatiotemporal data), statistical computing, and Bayesian methods. His interdisciplinary collaborations have spanned several fields, including environmental and occupational health, bioimaging, magnetic-resonance safety, and the spatial epidemiology of HPV-related cancers. In his spare time, Dr. Hughes is a devoted practitioner of yin yoga. In 2019 he completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training and a 50-hour yin teacher training, both with Semperviva Yoga Centres of Vancouver, Canada.
