Rui Hua, PhD

I am an assistant professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Health Data Science in the College of Health, with faculty affiliation with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the College of Engineering, Center for Community-Driven Assistive Technologies (CDAT) and Institute for Data, AI, Society, and Computation (I-DISC). Before starting at Lehigh, I got my PhD in engineering at Texas A&M University, worked as an electronics engineer at MKS Instruments, Inc. (now MKS Inc.), then finished my postdoc training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (rehabilitation hospital) and Northwestern University.

I am passionate about wearable technologies and digital health. My research covers the full-stack wearable systems integrated with clinical insights, covering electronics, signal processing, data analysis and AI to provide end-to-end wearable and AI-powered digital health solutions for gait rehabilitation and remote patient monitoring.

Our research focuses on neurorehabilitation (gait) and remote patient monitoring for Parkinson’s disease. We work closely with clinicians and people with Parkinson's disease. Our lab is highly interdisciplinary, bringing together students from engineering, data science, and pre-health tracks.
